Cláudio Santoro, practically unknown in Europe, is an astonishing composer. With his Paulistanas and the sometimes extremely short, almost haiku-like twelve pieces of the first book of his second series of Prelúdios, you will get a good idea of his universe. The Paulistanas form a set of seven pieces that might be viewed as structured in three distinct parts. The three scores by Heitor Villa-Lobos which Marcos Madrigal has placed at the heart of this retrospective have almost become symbols of Brazilian music. The Ciclo brasileiro, the Chôros V, and the Bachiana brasileira No. 4 are certainly among the most accomplished of his piano works. The Villa-Lobos' piano works, no less thickly textured, imposes bold dynamics, stormy contrasts, fields of vivid, crude, colour.
