Schubert composed his two four-part Impromptus collections a year before his death, in the second half of 1827, and they survive in two manuscripts. He numbered the individual pieces from I to VIII, which indicates that he regarded each piece as a unit. Only the first two pieces of the first group of Impromptus were published during his lifetime, in December 1827 by the publisher Tobias Haslinger in Vienna, who entitled the first piece "Impromptu". Schubert then made this designation his own by giving the same title to the second group of four pieces.
