Scattered over the broad landscape of music composed by British women are to be found abundant surprises. With its feverish virtuosity, Reinagle's Piano Sonata offers resonances of Mendelssohn as well as Sterndale Bennett. Russian expressionism and the grandiose style of Bax inform Dring's Fantasy Sonata (1938), a stormy score. By contrast, Carwithen’s Four Preludes (1950) adopt a naturalistic vein. Howell’s Boat Song is undoubtedly the ultimate revelation in this programme; this eight-minute score in the manner of Fauré is a poetic distillation of transfixing, inescapable beauty.
